Introduction
Ferry

Harwich International Port (HWH) is one of the UK's leading roll-on/roll-off ports. With more than 50 weekly ro/ro connections to the Netherlands and Denmark, the Port offers transport operators the ideal gateway into Europe and beyond. The port's clearly laid-out, first-class facilities have been developed in consultation with customers and designed to meet their needs.

In addition to freight traffic, HWH is a major gateway for passengers travelling between the UK and Continental Europe, offering daily services to the Netherlands and Denmark. Harwich is the UK port of call for Stena Line's fleet of extended RoPax ships, now the largest in the world. The Port has modified and extended an existing berth at the Port and invested in a new high-level passenger walkway, capable of taking passengers directly from the ferry terminal departure lounge to Deck 7 of Stena's vessels.

Cruise

HWH made the strategic decision in 1993 to enter into the cruise sector, with the focus on acting as a turnaround port. Three years later, a GB£1 million purpose-built cruise terminal was constructed, and a significant expansion programme was undertaken to improve the facilities and services available to cruise customers.

Since that time, the port has seen remarkably fast growth in cruise ship calls and has built up an enviable reputation as one of the UK's leading cruise ports. Harwich is ideally located for Baltic and Norwegian Fjord-bound cruises, and is "home port"  to many of the world's largest cruise operators. In recent years, the port has attracted an increasing number of  "transit" calls, with cruise operators making the decision to call at Harwich as part of their itineraries. Passengers are able to visit the tourist attractions of the historic town and nearby "Constable Country", as well as further afield in Cambridge and London.

HWH boasts excellent passenger and luggage handling facilities and has a long experience of handling passenger services. The 2,230-square-metre cruise terminal offers seating for 300 passengers, and is equipped with umerous check in desks and a spacious lounge , It is convenient, located within easy driving distance to London's four airports, and connected to the rail network. Parking is available for 600 cars and buses.

A major dredging programme alongside the cruise vessel berth and in the approach channel means Harwich can accommodate vessels with up to 9.5 metres draught.
